Day 1: August 16, 2014

Our internet is very spotty, but here we go!

Today was our travel day. We were so blessed at every leg of our trip.  The day in all aspects was wonderful.

We met at the airport bright and early. Our flight left on time.   One stop in Miami and we were on our way to Guatemala City.

Our very, very early morning flight.

Amy is our Tech Leader at Shepherd of the Lakes.  What a perfect store for her in Miami!  Yes, she is always on the go,

God's creation is perfect.

The sights into Guatemala City were incredible.  There are numerous volcanic mountain ranges in the area.  The city is at 5000 elevation.

We are waiting for Debby and Denny to get through customs.   They took care of some paperwork. More stories to come...

All our luggage and all of us safely aboard our bus. Ready for the 3+ hour trip to our location.
After stopping for lunch, we headed towards Zaccappa where we are staying.

We drove through the city and learned about some of the history.  Our wonderful guide and host for the week, Nury,  provided us colorful stories about buildings, culture, and the wonderful people of Guatemala.

Saturdays are Tomale days, and if someone hangsa red bag on their porch that means they made enough to sell.

At some of the city streets there were children performing. This lovely girl had such a great smile.  We gave her a tip.

The roads were winding but relatively good... A few rock slides here and there, and lots of motorcycles driving like crazy! We had beautiful views of the countryside. We went from an altitude of 5000 ft up and down and ended at 100 ft altitude.

After unpacking, dinner and devotions were headed to our rooms.  Kelly and Margie are turning in for the night.

  9. I am so happy you all made it there safe. We love seeing the picutres to know you are having a good time and most important safe! We are so proud of all of you for what you are doing. It takes a great deal of faith and courage to step out of the comforts of your own life to go and help others that are no so fortunate. We are praying for a safe return for all of you and that you are helping and blessing others.

    Mom (Kelly Decker).
We are proud of the amazing, strong, Godly woman that you are. You are always doing anything you can to help others out and everyone that knows you knows what kind of person you are. I know you always get "picked on" for trying to always do the right thing and make the right decision. But it is so much harder to think of everyone involved and try to do the best thing for everyone. You have taught me that in my life and now I get picked on for being "Little Kelly!" But I wear that title proudly because it means I am like you and I must be doing something right, because you are my role model. I know that it was hard to leave your family and do this but you are helping so many others and making a difference. So many of us look up to you and we are so proud to call you mother, friend, wife, sister, daugher and so many other things. We can't wait to have you return home safe with all of your stories (Cooper will be so excited to hear them all). We love you and respect what you are trying to do down there. Please be safe, have fun and return home soon.

    Love,
    Heidie, Ian and boys

  10. Dios les bendigas! Say hello to Nury, Pastor Luis and Debby for me. May God richly bless your time in Los Limones. We (Ascension - Charlotte, NC) had a team there about this time last year for VBS and construction. It was wonderful.
